After 18 months and lots of construction we are thrilled to announce that our interior space has been reimagined with interactive displays, increased interpretive elements and expanded stories and that we’re ready to invite you to the:

River of Time Re-opening

Saturday, October 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Our reception area has been painted and rearranged and now includes an art gallery/exhibition space where we will be featuring the thoughtful and creative photography and mixed media art of Megan Driving Hawk, a local artist and educator. This gallery will change every few months and feature an interesting selection of artists and exhibits related to the Southwest and themes found in the collection.

Getting ready to openThe first exhibit in our gallery hallway will feature the Smithsonian Traveling Poster Exhibit titled “Journey, Stories” exploring how movement has shaped the nation. Taking a broad look at expansion and migration from earliest settlers and Native American displacement to the effects that advancements in transportation have on mobility, visitors are challenged to compare their “migration” stories to the stories depicted in the exhibit.

Our new “RiverBanks Gift Shop” has been relocated, expanded and designed to accommodate an amazing selection of carefully curated gift items, books and décor. In keeping with museum standards, our gift shop items are wonderful mementos of the vast and varied stories depicted in the displays.

In our gallery exhibits you’ll find some of your favorites; Jack Swilling, “Tacky” the P-Bar horse and the Four Peaks Amethyst, but with increased interpretation to tell their robust stories. We’re also introducing pre-human residents like the Sonorasaurus and a “Bat Cave” featuring our local bats and the research currently being conducted by the local McDowell Sonoran Conservancy field team.

The changes are the result of numerous discussions with our members, volunteers and community constituents and the design and construction work of Michelle Reid and team from Museum Pro’s.

We are thrilled to invite you in and we think that you’ll be pleased with our new look!
